MCT Star August 2022: Another Month, Another Raise

The Federal Reserve raised the federal funds rate by 75 BPS for the second month in a row last week, to a range of 2.25% to 2.5%, but Fed Chair Powell’s talk about an end to the current rate-hiking cycle during his subsequent press conference excited triggered a rally in rates. The Fed now believes that rates are “right in the range” of “neutral” (i.e. an interest rate that neither hinders nor fuels economic growth), while Power expressed further doubt that the U.S. was in a recession – given the low unemployment rate and solid job gains.
